I HEART Sincere Comments

Description

Once upon a time, a young man said to me, 'You are pretty!' - and then, a short while later, he added something along the lines of, 'Actually, I think you are ugly, but now that I said you are pretty, you owe me'. Naturally, I was somewhat offended - not by his opinion of my looks, since everyone has their own ideas and standards of beauty; but by his deception - by the fact that he wanted to get something out of me by pretending to be nice. The same, I feel, can be applied to DA. Time and again, I have had people approach me with posts like, 'I watched you, so now you must watch me back!'; 'I commented on your drawing, so now you must draw my character!'; 'I said your artwork looks good, so now you must make a donation on my profile!'. I find it a little saddening - and I approach all the visitors to my page with this simple request:

Be sincere.

I know that I am no Da Vinci, but every drawing and comic I make has a piece of my soul in it; they are meant to make people smile or sigh wistfully or maybe even cry. If my skill or imagination is not sufficient to move you, I will understand that - but in that case, please move on, without pretending that you like what I have to offer just to make me feel like I owe you.

Please comment/fave/watch for the sake of my art (or anyone else's art, for that matter), not for the sake of potential favours you hope to get out of the artist.

I hope this stamp will prove useful to others here as well! :D

And I think you indeed owed him...a couple of strong words. For being a bloody stupid, manipulative and inconsistent git.

Cannot but agree that when someone comments/donates/favs/watches/etc, the recieving side owes them nothing. Any reply is optional. Well, unless the two are bound by some sort of agreement (like commissions). If a number of favs/watchers etc is so important for someone, there are a lot of people who'll eagerly fav anything, up to the whole gallery, and watch anyone for a fistful of points. Want a pic from this very artist? Points/money is more eloquent than words alone. All hail sincerity.
